About Kate Chivers
She originally worked in enforcement, starting out at the Metropolitan Police in London, and rising to the rank of detective within Lewisham Borough CID. When Kate moved to New Zealand in 2003, she joined NZ Police and it was during her full-time role as sergeant that she completed her studies as an LLB (Bachelor of Laws) with the University of Auckland.
After qualifying, Kate took a role with one of Auckland’s most well-known law firms: McVeagh Fleming. Based at their Albany office, she moved up to the level of associate within three years and enjoyed broad exposure to all aspects of property, wills, trusts, commercial/business law, and estate management. She latterly chose to specialise in commercial property transactions, leasing and subdivision work.
In 2018, Kate was appointed as a senior solicitor to MinterEllisonRuddWatts, where she represented not just smaller businesses and private individuals, but also a major NZ bank in relation to its leasing matters as a tenant. She further advised other large clients on leasing, property matters and related financial transactions.
More recently, Kate has been working as the in-house legal counsel for Maat Consulting, a group of companies which primarily focus on property investment. Her day-to-day duties have been wide-ranging and included completing due diligence on potential high value transactions which, once deemed acceptable, are converted into public offers in compliance with the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013.
Outside work, Kate and her family immerse themselves in life on the North Shore. A keen sporting family, you’ll find them participating in various running events or out on the water, catching dinner (if they’re lucky!)
