Barrie Hopkins started in the law at the offices of Lovegrove George and Turner in Auckland City whilst studying part time at Auckland University College for his LL.B degree.
The Queen Street firm had been formed in 1922 and when Barrie joined it in 1946 it consisted of two partners and three staff.
Post War, Commander Harold George did not return to the law and Barrie was made a partner in 1952. The firm then changed its name to Lovegrove Turner and Hopkins. Claude Lovegrove retired a few years later and the firm became Turner Hopkins and Partners, with over 60 staff and branches in Takapuna, Albany and Orewa. Sadly, Harry Turner died at any early age in 1969 but his name has been perpetuated.
During Barrie's period as senior partner, the firm produced three who would become Q.C.s two of whom are now Dames - the Chief Justice Dame Sian Elias and Dame Lowell Goddard and two District Court Judges.
In 1977 the firm split, with some partners taking the North Shore practice and renaming themselves simply, Turner Hopkins and Barrie taking the Auckland City practice, where he continued to practice under his own name until 1st July this year.
Now the wheel has turned full circle and Barrie has returned, merging his practice with Turner Hopkins, Takapuna. He now operates from our second office at 416 Lake Road, Takapuna with his trusted long standing loyal staff. Jackie and Debbie have been with him for 36 and 25 years respectively.
Barrie is quintessentially a "Shore Boy", having lived most of his life in Hurstmere Road around the lake and now in Thorne's Bay.
He was a foundation member of the Takapuna Ski Club and the Takapuna Water Ski Club, a one-time member of the Takapuna Cricket Club and the Takapuna Tennis Club and is currently a member of the North Shore Golf Club, the Takapuna Boating Club and the Takapuna Masonic Lodge.
Barrie sees it as fitting that he should now be practicing among so many of his old friends and associates and looks forward to getting to meet as many clients of Turner Hopkins as he can, as well as looking after his long standing clients in his new location.
