Introduction to Immigration
The criteria for obtaining a visa for entry into New Zealand is determined by the New Zealand Government’s Immigration Policy. That policy sets out the Government’s broad objectives for migration. The criteria represents the balancing of competing forces of economic growth, cost to the State, security and equity/fairness. That policy translates into “Instructions to Visa Officers” that determine what criteria/process should be applied to the applications.
The current categories of application for residency are as follows:
- Business Category
- Family Category applications
- Skilled Migration
- Residence from Work
- Special Categories
It is well known that many high quality migrants who would potentially provide enormous benefit to New Zealand are declined resident’s visas. This is often as a result of poor migration advice and/or representation or Immigration New Zealand simply getting it wrong.
Apart from residence visas there are also visas available for those who intend a shorter or temporary stay in New Zealand.
